Hō‘ailona’s Health & Science Updates
Hō‘ailona’s Health & Science Updates
JUNE - JULY 2010 ~ A Busy Summer ...
(Photo by B. Richter, NMFS Permit No. 932-1905)
Months of patient training have paid off and we have been able to measure Hō‘ailona’s metabolic rate as he rests in water. This makes Hō‘ailona the youngest seal for these measurements and first in which we have been able to follow his metabolism as he matures from pup to teenage seal. With his continued cooperation we hope to publish his data in a special issue on monk seal biology in Aquatic Mammals this Fall. In this way Hō‘ailona will not only help his Hawaiian seal family but also the Mediterranean monk seal (for which there is no such data!)
Ocean Pollution
The oil spill in the Gulf has affected all of us here with concerns about pollution affecting all of the ocean animals. To do his part, Hō‘ailona has been promoting coastal cleanups from California to Hawaii and beyond. He made a YouTube video about it. CLICK HERE TO WATCH IT!
The hope is that working together we can help clean up America and more.

Hō‘ailona receives a fish as he learns how to rest in the metabolic pool.
The summer has been busy for Hō‘ailona and for pollution in our oceans!
