Travels with KP2
This website is about a young Hawaiian monk seal named Hō‘ailona (originally called KP2 for Kauai Pup 2) that came from the blue waters of Hawai‘i. This special seal, whose Hawaiian name literally means “a sign from the ocean”, is teaching us a lot about his unique and endangered species. Over the next year we will follow his journey and invite you to come along. During his travels you will learn about the science of monk seals and the status of their wild populations. You will be able to monitor Hō‘ailona’s health and schooling. You will also learn about the relationship between humans and the oceans, and discover the unique bond between Hawaiians and the animals of the seas. Most importantly, you will find that you too can help marine mammals like Hō‘ailona and preserve their ocean homes.
Each month my team from the Marine Mammal Physiology Project at the University of California in Santa Cruz (UCSC) will update Hō‘ailona’s journal so that you can follow his journey as he inspires people from across the globe to be kind to the oceans.
Like any student, each day is a new adventure for Hō‘ailona at the university. To find out more click on the postcards below
